Some women, when they become pregnant, are concerned about how others will view them as a pregnant woman.
The truth is that the reactions that people have to pregnant women represent a wide range. Some people, unfortunately, may think that pregnant women are wimpy, overly dramatic, and operating at 75% work capacity. Others whole-heartedly believe that women are their most creative and beautiful when they’re with child and that women are to be pampered and appreciated during this time. Many know that women are strong, mentally and physically, accomplishing so much – again physically and emotionally – during a compressed period of time.
What I now personally know is the latter. We women are amazing. We are each presented with a unique set of opportunities and challenges during our pregnancies. And, using different approaches, mindsets, and choices, we rise to the occasion. We increase our capacity to handle what life brings us. We chose to be pregnant in our own unique way and this may involve actions that our neighbors, co-workers, and friends may view as wimpy, bitchy, or outrageously inspiring!
This is simply going to be the case when we’re talking about an area of life where people are passionate, people have had profoundly personal and significant experiences, and there is simply a lot of experience out there. Billions of women have birthed billions of babies. So, we think we know a lot about being pregnant – and we do in many senses. Yet, we don’t know the unique experience of each pregnancy. I know now that we are not to judge. And, we’re human and we’re going to judge.
So, be careful about how you judge yourself! Do your best to acknowledge how capable, creative, and awesome you’re being! And, surround yourself with people who will do the same.
