GaGA! Growing and Getting Awesome… the Official Loving the Pregnant You Blog

Enjoying the journey

About six years ago, when I began contemplating the idea of becoming pregnant, I realized I had some pretty cynical thoughts and feelings about pregnancy. “Pregnancy doesn’t look fun at all,” I thought. “You get big, your ankles swell, your body is out of your control, and you can get special diseases!”

I quickly realized that if I didn’t change my outlook, I was simply going to “get through” a couple of pregnant years of my life, and I wasn’t committed to living that way! Having been a leadership and life coach for more than 10 years, I had talked with many people about creating what they wanted, leveraging their strengths, and shifting limiting mindsets. It was time to start practicing what I preached…in the area of pregnancy.

I didn’t immediately know how, yet I knew it was possible and I made a commitment to enjoy my pregnancies to the best of my ability. And, I succeeded! It wasn’t a bump-less journey by any means, yet I went on to love being pregnant.

The lesson I’m thinking about today as I share my past perspectives is one about enjoying the journey. I could’ve gone through my pregnancies just waiting for them to be over. And, as humans, we often live this way. “Life will be better when…” “I just have to get through this then…” I find myself falling into these trains of thoughts from time to time. And I have to remind myself that the time to enjoy and embrace life and do what we love is right now.
